CPR training: for whom and why?

Par Cedric Pharand Le 2021-06-28

CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) training teaches you to quickly identify a respiratory and circulatory emergency as well as to apply the maneuvers necessary to restore the victim’s condition while waiting for help to arrive. What is the advantage of taking these courses and in what context are they compulsory?

What is the benefit of taking CPR training?

After CPR training, you are able to react quickly to a person (adult, child or newborn) in respiratory or circulatory distress. You know what to do and you know how to handle first aid equipment correctly. Studies show that your intervention could increase the victim’s chances of survival by about 30%. In short, an individual who has taken CPR courses can save lives wherever they go, as long as they have the necessary materials.

Who is CPR training for?

CPR training is for everyone: adults, adolescents and children. Moreover, it is now compulsory for students in the 3rd year of secondary school. Several levels are available and there are courses suitable for all age groups. In addition, legislation in Canada now requires employers to designate a defined number of people (depending on the workforce size) who will undergo first aid training to ensure workplace safety, regardless of the sector of activity. Finally, CPR courses are compulsory for all health professionals such as doctors, nurses, paramedics, pediatricians or dentists.

We further note that the validity of CPR certificates is limited. We therefore recommend that you repeat the training and retake the exams when due.
