The difference between a PCR test and an Antigen

Covid-19 continues to claim lives around the world and it is strongly recommended to get tested quickly after the first symptoms appear in order to confirm if you have the disease and to receive treatment in time. You have the choice between the antigen test and the PCR test, which differ mainly in the level of reliability of the results and the waiting time.

The antigen screening test

The antigen screening test, better known as Antigen, detects proteins on the surface of the virus to identify it. It is performed by nasal swab using a swab in both nostrils. The sample is then brought into contact with a reagent liquid to confirm the presence or absence of the proteins sought which, we recall, are detectable only if the virus is alive.

The Antigen screening test can be done by yourself, at home, provided you have the necessary equipment, sold freely on the market. One of its biggest advantages is its low cost. Plus, you can get the results in 10-20 minutes, depending on the brand, since there’s no need to send the sample to the lab. Nevertheless, its level of precision is lower than that of the PCR test.

The PCR screening test

The PCR, or Polymerase Chain Reaction, screening test detects the RNA of the virus present in the nose or the back of the throat. Like the Antigen, it is performed by nasal sampling in both nostrils. The difference is that the operation must be performed by a medical professional. Also, it is necessary to send the sample to an analysis laboratory for the detection of the genetic material of the virus.

As a result, the waiting time for results is longer, between 24 and 48 hours. In addition, the cost of the test is much higher. Nevertheless, the results are more reliable, especially if the samples are taken during the period when viral activity is at its peak, that is to say between the 3th and the 7 th day following the appearance of the first symptoms.

Antigen test or PCR?

The antigen screening test was developed to lighten the work of analysis laboratories, which is why it is available to the general public. In addition, it is less expensive and you can get the results faster. We recommend this option for regular checks, especially within a company. Indeed, it will make it possible to quickly detect asymptomatic people carrying the virus and thus to take the necessary measures in time.

You can also use this solution before turning to a laboratory to reassure you if you have any suspicions about your state of health. Finally, always apply barrier gestures such as distancing, wearing a mask and using hydroalcoholic solution to limit the spread of the virus.
